The essays in this volume were first delivered as papers at the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Kolleg „Syro-Palestinian Religions and the Hebrew Bible“ that was presented at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies from 4-5 November 2005. The aim of the Kolleg was to bring together prominent German scholars and South African and other African scholars to discuss major issues in the present debate on the interface between Syro-Palestinian religions and the study of the Hebrew Bible. Different perspectives were offered and a variety of methodologies were applied in reading and interpreting the ancient sources, including texts and material sources.

Als im August 1868 dem Elsässer F.A. Klein als erstem Europäer im ostjordanischen Dhiban die Stele mit der Inschrift des moabitischen Königs Mescha (ca. 853-810 v. Chr.) gezeigt wurde, konnte er nicht absehen, in welchem Ausmaß dieser Fund und seine Auswertung die Erforschung der Levante des 9. Jh. v. Chr. und des Alten Testaments bis zum heutigen Tage voranbringen sollte. Von allen Inschriften in moabitischer Sprache ist die Mescha-Inschrift immer noch die umfangreichste, weshalb Ernest Renan sie bereits im 19. Jh. als “La reine de toutes les inscriptions sémitiques” bezeichnete.

Jens Kamlah and Hélène Sader (eds.). Tell el-Burak I. The Middle Bronze Age. With Chapters Related to the Site and to the Mamluk-Ottoman Periods.

A unique Monumental Building dating to the early part of the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1900–1700 BCE) was uncovered at the southern Lebanese coast by the joint Lebanese-German excavation project at Tell el-Burak. The impressive architecture of the building was exposed in eight excavation seasons during the years 2001–2011. Inside the largest room of the Monumental Building (Room 10) the excavations brought to light the discovery of Middle Bronze Age mural paintings in situ on lime plaster covering the inner faces of the mud-brick walls. This volume consists of the final publication of all excavation results concerning the Middle Bronze Age at Tell el- Burak (Area 1 and Area 2). It furthermore includes an introduction to the joint Lebanese-German excavation project, chapters relating to the site, and the final publication of the excavated remains of the Mamluk-Ottoman Periods in Area 1. The Tell el-Burak publication series will be continued within the ADPV series by volumes presenting the Iron Age results of the Lebanese-German excavation project.

Zauber und Magie im antiken Palästina und seiner Umwelt
Zauber und Magie bilden im Alten Orient wesentliche Bestandteile der Lebensbewältigung und der Lebensdeutung. So finden sich in den Kulturen Ägyptens, Kleinasiens, Mesopotamiens und Syrien-Palästinas vielfältige Rituale zur Abwehr lebensbedrohlicher Größen und zur Sicherung lebenserhaltender Kräfte.

Der vorliegende Sammelband bietet eine Übersicht über magische Texte von einzelnen Beschwörungen auf Amuletten bis hin zu ausgeführten literarischen Sammlungen sowie über archäologische Befunde von ägyptischen Skarabäen aus der Spätbronzezeit bis hin zu aramäischen Zauberschalen aus der Spätantike und der frühislamischen Zeit. Ein Schwerpunkt des Bandes liegt auf der Interpretation von Zauber und Magie in biblischen Texten. Dabei wird in den einzelnen Aufsätzen auch das grundsätzliche Verhältnis von Magie und Religion thematisiert. Klassifikationen magischer Artefakte und magischer Phänomene, die den jeweiligen Kulturen angemessen ist, werden ebenso vorgestellt wie Fragen zum Verhältnis zwischen schriftlicher und mündlicher Überlieferung magischer Rituale oder zur interkulturellen Bedeutung von Magie.
