The construction of sacred spaces has been shaped throughout millennia by the idea of a divine presence within the realm of human life. In the course of time, manifold and diverse architectural forms have been developed to express the idea of a divine presence at a particular place and to make it tangible there. Thus, religious architecture aims to enable a local and multi-dimensional encounter with the sacred.
This volume provides thirteen contributions on temples, synagogues, churches, and mosques from ancient Palestine. These papers show developments within the Southern Levant, from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Islamic periods, related to the construction, use, and abandonment of religious buildings. The main architectural forms of the buildings in the different epochs are highlighted, as well as the continuities and discontinuities of diachronic developments. Symbolic, ideological, and social conceptions of sacred buildings are considered, as well as their communicative, representative, and regional aspects.
Numerous plans, drawings, and photographs of the architectural remains and of individual elements (altars, benches, mosaics, columns) serve to illustrate the religious buildings discussed in this volume. A total of twenty-six color plates add to the volume’s illustrations.

Als im August 1868 dem Elsässer F.A. Klein als erstem Europäer im ostjordanischen Dhiban die Stele mit der Inschrift des moabitischen Königs Mescha (ca. 853-810 v. Chr.) gezeigt wurde, konnte er nicht absehen, in welchem Ausmaß dieser Fund und seine Auswertung die Erforschung der Levante des 9. Jh. v. Chr. und des Alten Testaments bis zum heutigen Tage voranbringen sollte. Von allen Inschriften in moabitischer Sprache ist die Mescha-Inschrift immer noch die umfangreichste, weshalb Ernest Renan sie bereits im 19. Jh. als „La reine de toutes les inscriptions sémitiques“ bezeichnete.

Jens Kamlah and Hélène Sader (eds.). Tell el-Burak I. The Middle Bronze Age. With Chapters Related to the Site and to the Mamluk-Ottoman Periods.

A unique Monumental Building dating to the early part of the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1900–1700 BCE) was uncovered at the southern Lebanese coast by the joint Lebanese-German excavation project at Tell el-Burak. The impressive architecture of the building was exposed in eight excavation seasons during the years 2001–2011. Inside the largest room of the Monumental Building (Room 10) the excavations brought to light the discovery of Middle Bronze Age mural paintings in situ on lime plaster covering the inner faces of the mud-brick walls. This volume consists of the final publication of all excavation results concerning the Middle Bronze Age at Tell el- Burak (Area 1 and Area 2). It furthermore includes an introduction to the joint Lebanese-German excavation project, chapters relating to the site, and the final publication of the excavated remains of the Mamluk-Ottoman Periods in Area 1. The Tell el-Burak publication series will be continued within the ADPV series by volumes presenting the Iron Age results of the Lebanese-German excavation project.
